Lessons for Middle School
This program designed for 6th grade girls targets difficult issues of balancing eating and activity to maintain a healthy weight. The “Girls Only Club”* format encourages girls to have fun after school while making and tasting healthy snacks, becoming more active and learning more about nutrition. The twelve week line-up includes the following lessons: Reflection Connection, Food for Thought, Power Down to Power Up, Rethink Your Drink, Fast Food Frenzy, Hoops for Health, Fruit Rocks, Go for the Green, Hip Hop Rules!, Snack Attack!, Lighten’ Up!, Club Graduation, and an alternate lesson Feeling Blue. Complete lesson plans are available.
* A “Boys Club” is currently being piloted.
Individual lessons are available to embed nutrition topics into the academic curriculum. Pennsylvania academic standards have been identified for each lesson. Currently relevant topics such as healthy beverage selection and eating in fast food restaurants are presented in a manner appealing to students in grades 5 – 8.
Several of our individual lessons have accompanying lessons available for download on this website.
Cooking Clubs are offered to classes as a series of lessons designed to teach students how to prepare simple healthy meals that can be made at home. Educators demonstrate the actual recipie preperation in the classroom, with the help of students, and teach healthy concepts with a theme for each club lesson.
Newsletters on a variety of topics are available for download.
